Posted on 4/15/2004 - Bristol Herald Courier & Watauga Democrat - wataugademocrat.comMr. Thomas Hensel Stokes, 88, of Chilhowie, Va., a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
He was born March 15, 1916, in Cove Creek, to the late Ed and Chloe Harmon Stokes.
Mr. Stokes was a retired custodian from Appalachian State University and a member of Cove Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include four brothers, Ralph Stokes and Jim Stokes and wife, Ann, all of Chilhowie; Landon Stokes and wife, Betty, of Lexington and Len Stokes and wife, Frankie, of Boone; two sisters, Ms. Peggy Clark and Ruth Creed and husband, Dennis, all of Boone. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including a special niece and caregiver, Debbie Lawson, and friends, Michael Richardson and Carol Tester, both of Boone.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Roger Stokes, Edward Stokes and Bill Stokes.
Services were conducted Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Cove Creek Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. James Hagaman. Burial followed in Cove Creek Church Cemetery.
Williams Funeral Home in Chilhowie, Va., was in charge of the
arrangements.
